Jan 27, 2013· I've started body work on my '53 Bel Air and once I start grinding/smoothing my welds it looks like crap and I have to wonder how much metal I've removed from the surrounding area. I am using a 4" grinder with a hard disc take down the high welds and then a medium grit sanding pad.

A wheel will move it around some and when it loads up I touch it against a wheel dresser stick or another used up wheel clamped in a vice. A belt sander (portable and 6" X 48") works also to shape, grind, cut or wear aluminum into the desired condition.

I have been told by guys over the years that green wheels work better. Ive done a lot of grinding(jig,OD,ID,surface) and my routine with aluminum is to use the wheel that is mounted.
