Germany's biomass electricity generating capacity is mostly made up of small anaerobic digestion plants (biogas) running on farm waste and maize (see map, above). In contrast, UK biomass is dominated by the burning of wood pellets at Drax. Formerly the country's largest coal-fired power station, half of its six units now burn biomass.

As of 2011, the Energy Information Administration listed 589 coal-fired power plants in the U.S., down from 633 coal-fired power plants in 2002. Of these 589 plants, 332 were owned by electric utilities, 98 by independent power producers, and the remainder by industrial and commercial producers of combined heat and power.

Now, Uniper says it will complete the plant and put it into operation. The project has basically been on ice since mid-2009. With a billion euros already sunk in the plant, Uniper's decision to proceed is understandable. On the other hand, the outlook for coal power is bleak in Germany.

Existing power plants in Germany are designed to operate flexibly. Load following is achieved by German natural gas combined cycle plants and coal-fired power plants. New coal-fired power plants have a minimum load capability of approximately 40%, with further potential to reduce this to 20–25%.
