Apr 05, 2016· Chino Mine is one of New Mexico's standout mines and host to many historic events in mining. It was a critical copper mine supporting Spain's New World holdings in the early 1800s. It was the hub for many burgeoning mining towns after the Civil War. And it became the test site for one of mining's most significant innovations: open pit mining.

A burgeoning mining industry stimulated early growth in the Arizona Territory, and by 1864 nearly 25 percent of the male, non-native populace was prospectors. By the 1870's a plethora of hardrock mines were yielding prodigious volumes of copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold ore.

The Chino Mine is an open-pit copper mine located near Silver City, New Mexico. The mine, located in the town of Santa Rita, 15 miles east of Silver City, began life as the Chino Copper Company in 1909, started by mining engineer John M. Sully.

New Mexico Production. Copper has been produced in New Mexico since prehistoric times, but it is part of New Mexico's recorded history.
